dreams

So last night I went to sleep hoping my ol' buddy would come visit me in my dreams. I do enjoy when my friends and family who have died show up in dreams. Instead I was treated to a long, very strange dream. The first part that I remember had to do with being given some kind of herb mixture (by my wife, no less) to eat. This mixture was supposed to turn me into a sort of Mr. Hyde kind of super evil kind of person. I'm not sure what that one meant. The herbs didn't work, except to make me feel kind of sick and weird. I think there was some relief there. After that, I went to a Damned show in some warehouse that was very sparsely attended. I know it was the same dream continued since I was telling Danny about the weird herbs. He gave me three pills and told me to share them with Todd. He said they would do the trick....whatever that meant. Why do people want me to be evil? Anyhow, I felt bad for the Damned because no one was there, so I went to see if they had a place to stay that night. I go straight up to Davy (Jones, that is) who is apparently fronting the Damned in my dream. He says thanks, but that Captain Sensible is not really a very good house guest. I'm sure that part is not accurate. Captain is a very nice man....anyhow.....after Davy shows me how to properly put spline in a screen door, I don't really remember much. I know I saw my old bandmates Terry and EJ getting ready to play in their new band, which was called "angels and outcasts"....

then I woke up.

I remember

So at first I sort of despised Josh. He was this very cool boy who a lot of the girls I had crushes on were very into. He was a lanky fucker, such as myself, but was way more into the "mod" scene than I was. We met a few times as high school brats and he was always nice to me, but I couldn't really find my way to be very nice back. I was like that back then...

When we all started going to Phoenix College in '88, though, when I connected with Josh. This was probably due to Dave Ahr. He and I had many cool adventures. We spent quite a lot of time together between 88 and 92 or so...I think the last time I saw Josh was in 95 or 96. I wish I could see him again.He and I were.....well....we were like brothers, in a way. We had many heart to heart talks that were invaluable to me back then. I trusted Josh implicitly, which is something I didn't have a ton of back in those days.

He drove me to one of the sketchiest things I ever was a part of.....I'll never ever forget that day. It'll be in the book....

RIP Josh....you were loved.

a month since my last blog

let's see here....

thieves suck. I will remember my 39th birthday for being one of the several times I've had a car broken into. I will remember the show at Joe's Grotto for being very odd and not the most interesting way to start a birthday. Joe's is not my favorite venue. It's okay, and it is always good to see Steve McDonald running sound, but there is something about Joe's I just can't seem to wrap my brain around.

The babies continue to amaze me. I love them so much. I am very lucky to have a large, loving family. They may be trying to put me into an early grave, some times, but I forgive them. My wife is pretty keen too. I like her.

Cardinals suck.

Suns season starts Wednesday and I'm stoked.

The Hulk was a great film. As was Iron Man. Got them both for my birthday.

Jogging seems like a good idea for the first time in my life. What the fuck is up with that?

I never thought about it before but food is very comforting to me when I have something I need to say but cannot find the words. I can grab a cookie or piece of cheesecake or candy bar and the stress, frustration, and tension seems to get better. I'm guessing it is this way for the lonely, the scared, and the angry, too.

The Fucking Obituaries

why do I read them?

John Dougherty is dead. I hadn't seen him in a long time, but I liked him from the very beginning.We were friendly in grade school, became better friends during high school when we would hang out at journalism conventions, and then he dated my friend Davina. The last time I saw him was probably about 15 years ago, but I have no doubt that if we saw each other on the street tomorrow, we wouldn't be right back to being the same friends we always were.

He had a malignant melanoma. He was 40 years old.

Fuck. What a hilarious dude he was....I'm sorry we didn't get to hang out more.

He was into the Clash back in the 80's, but I forgave him for that. He was always into the political side of things, but the fucker was brilliant and could talk intelligently about everything, or at least it seemed that way. One of the most fun weekends I had in high school was spent partying with him. I will always remember the bathtub full of ice, little kings, and guinness.

My mind is full of thoughts, as usual. Too many to share them all. I was looking forward to getting to work and learning about the ins and outs of the new job, which is only a temporary job, but still new and something I want to do well while I do it. The job is all about helping children between birth and three years old get the resources they need if they are developmentally delayed in some way. Not super exciting, but at least it is doing some good in the community while I wait for the next school year to begin.

I am not there, though, learning about the new job because our A/C is not working again. I hear the dude up there banging on shit and that can't be a good sign. At least it doesn't seem like it should be...

I've even got my new dockers on.

I'm frustrated about the whole situation of music in my life. I love to play, but I also feel like I am at a point where I don't really know what I want to play. I go back and forth between thoughts of really trying to push the envelope and create even more of the music I hear in my head, which is difficult because it takes the right combination of folks to get that done, or if I just want to play with the best possible players and improve my skills...and the idea of carrying all my gear to some stupid bar just doesn't really do it for me anymore. Obviously there are special occasions and such. I'm really looking forward to the next PINKY show, which will be August 23....I don't know..I don't know...I don't know.

I think the babies have taught me about how I really like spending my time.

a series of near misses and narrowly avoided tragedies

Life is full of irony. It is. I'm convinced. I should be dead. I should be, it's a fact, but I'm not. I'm alive and lucky and surrounded by love. It is ironic that I type this on this morning. Why? Because I say it is, that's why. My life can be ironic if I want it to be.

I'm am reminded of this idea of "near misses and narrowly avoided tragedies" on a regular basis. Having small children, oh my, is a way to see just how much luck surrounds us continually. It is almost as if the littles have this sort of force field around them that protects them from disaster. Occasionally, sure, things get through the shield, but for the most part, they remain relatively unscathed.

I look at my own history and see the same type of layer of protection. It is as if I've had an invisible layer of bubble wrap around me for the majority of my life. How lucky! How ironic? It is ironic because why should I be so lucky? What did I do? Was I some sort of almost decent person in a previous life? Or is that this life? Is it the next one where more of my dreams will come true?

Or is that next month?

It is ironic that I am asking all of these questions early on a Wednesday morning because I will be talking, later today, about what an expert I am....and I am an expert. With any LUCK, it will be a successful conversation.

Sydney Pollack died the other day. Harvey Korman died yesterday. Who is next? I liked both of those guys.

My son almost died over the weekend. He OD'd (accidentally) and spent Saturday and part of Sunday on a respirator. That is nothing I would want anyone else to have to go through. At least he isn't dead. I'm glad for that...but as soon as he feels well enough, I would like to knock some sense into him.

Not that I advocate physical violence in any way. The older I get, the more I don't see the point at all...but people are stupid and think they can solve problems with their fists. I was one of'em.

But not any more.

Time to fix dinner for the kids. I'm so tired of not feeling well. The babies haven't felt well in almost two weeks. I've got a watered down version of what they have, I guess. Liam had to go to the doctor again today and get some antibiotics for an ear infection.

a week has gone by

so I've been sending out resumes. yay. no bites yet, but they will bite.

we had a yard sale and did pretty well. it is so weird how the people almost always come in waves. Got rid of a bunch of stuff. The house is coming along quite well thanks to the improved amount of free space.

worked very little last week....which sucked.

Recorded on Thursday night. Played bass and guitar for 7.5 hours straight, pretty much. It sounds so kickass. I'm freaking stoked on this record. I just have to come up with some great lyrics by next week.

Which reminds me...I need to do some emailing.

I have not been writing as of late. Too tired, too this, too that. I don't really have a decent excuse except laziness. I'm supposed to be going to physical therapy for my knee, but I haven't made the second appointment yet. If I don't take care of it, it will not take care of me...yada yada yada.

Suns lost tonight. My basketball season is officially over. Yeah, I might watch a bit here and there, but as of now, I really don't care who wins. I guess I kinda hope the Spurs win, so the Suns will not have lost in vain, but I don't think the Spurs can beat the hornets and then the Lakers....whatever, though....who cares?

I was thinking about my old friend Dana tonight. He was also a Suns fan. I wish he was still around. I would have liked to see what kind of man he would have turned into....he was a fine friend, and a fine young man, that's for sure.

I feel like I am at a crossroads. I'm happy about it, but I'm wondering which path to take.

Time is a strange thing

Last night was a really good night in a lot of ways. It ended on a sour note for me as I screwed up and was not the husband I am capable of being. I let the wife down and she's definitely right for being upset with me. It was good, though, to see the folks who passed through our doors. We hosted a baby shower for our wonderful friends, Mark and Mo. I am very lucky to have a lot of good friends in my life. I hope that everyone is so lucky...I really do.

today

I've now hung one mirror and two pictures. We have things on the wall. I went through the old posters and found that about 2/3 of my collection has water damage. Apparently the precautions I took to waterproof the poster box did not work. My beloved Butthole Surfers poster, which was proudly hung in several of my homes over the late 80's and early 90's bit the dust, as did many, many sex pistols, bauhaus, damned, and other cool posters. Being the packrat that I am, I need to purge, for sure, and the wife and I have gotten rid of quite a bit of stuff over the past few days. We're beginning the process of weeding out...thanks Black Flag.

Speaking of Black Flag, I've been reading a lot of Henry Rollins stuff over the past year or so. I really like the way the man thinks. I would like to meet him, I think, and talk about the world. I guess I'll have to write a book or become a movie star to do that.

I also put up a ceiling fan today and changed 3 door locks out. I'm fucking handy.

I took a bike ride the other day. I learned that my neighborhood is all up and down. It's uphill to the freeway and then, when you get to my street, it's uphill to 19th avenue. Weird.

I looked for Burt Reynolds on myspace this morning. I'm avoiding doing the plumbing, so I'm looking up the Bandit on this here thingamajig. There were several different pages for Burt, but none have been updated in awhile, so I didn't bother trying to add Burt as a friend.

Married some folks yesterday. It was weird because this time, I didn't know them at all. Not the same as marrying people you like. It was a good experience though. I appreciate that Amy and Scott thought enough of me to ask me to help out with their family.

Quiet in the house right now...my beautiful wife is sleeping. She washed the bottles yesterday and for that, I am always grateful.

Big party next weekend....something to look forward to.

Weird dream last night. There was my friend Brian and he brought this sort of homeless bum type of person (and I know how bad that may sound, but that's who this person was in my dream) to a party I was having. Anyhow, the agitation started when I told this "bum" type of dude that he wasn't welcome at Mark and Mo's party next week because he didn't know them. He got a little agitated by this. A bit later in the dream, there was a group of people in the house and Teresa was in my friend Teresa's arms (isn't that a coincidence) and this bum dude was trying to get her to kiss his fingers. When she wouldn't, he started poking my little princess in the face. This pissed me off and told him to stop immediately or he was getting his ass kicked. A bit later, the same type of situation happened and the bum ended up hitting Teresa in the face. Not super hard or anything, but he was trying to act like he was playing with her, but it was more mean than anything else. I grabbed the bum and through him out of the house. When we got outside, I hit him several times in the face drawing blood, which is weird because when I fight in dreams, my blows usually don't do anything to the person I'm fighting. After hitting him, I literally through him across the parking lot (we were in the apartment complex now that I lived in for 86 to 87. He was lying on his face and bleeding a lot. The next thing I know, I'm answering questions from these complete asshole police officers and I have the feeling that I'm going to jail for assaulting this motherfucker who was an asshole to my baby. I was getting super pissed about this...

then I woke up.

What a week. Went to the ER with Liam. He's fine now, it seems, but the first few days were hell. He wasn't sleeping, had high fevers, wouldn't eat, and puked what he did eat. 10 hours in the ER later, though, and he seems to be back on track. Luckily it was a very, VERY, light work week, even though I almost quit on Monday. I am still ready to do something different. Anybody want to hire me?

My tests from a week ago came back normal, so who knows what is going on with my throat or knee. I guess I may be a hypochondriac....or a complete stress case. Either way, I win.

Took the boy to jail yesterday. I get to pick him up in a couple of hours. I hope it did him some good. Obviously, the Marines are still willing to take him, but he has to clear up this DUI mess first. If he screws up again, though, the Marines will start looking elsewhere.

Read an interesting article in the az repugnant last Sunday. It basically said that civilization as we know it is over within the decade because of the oil catastrophe that looms over our heads. It was very cheerful. I wish I would have saved it so I could read it every day.

I should be asleep on the couch right now....and I don’t have much else to say about much of anything.

In 1990, I threw a party at my mom’s house (I was housesitting) right before Christmas. It was freaking cold and it was great time. The usual suspects were there and everybody had a good time. Anyhow, Kristi Jo and I got really drunk and she decided ask me if I would consider becoming her new roommate up in Berkeley. I thought it was probably drunk talk, but over the course of Christmas vacation, we continued to talk about this possibility. Southwest Airlines ran a special, just after Christmas, for $40 roundtrip tickets to Oakland, so I bought myself a ticket and decided I would fly up there and check it out...you know, see if I liked it...
I went up for MLK weekend. There was a protest going on the first full day I was there. The first Iraq conflict had just started a few days earlier, so the bay area was all in an uproar about the new "war". Joan Baez sang a protest song or two from the steps of the federal building in SF. Kristi Jo and I walked with the protesters down Market and felt very hippy-ish, I guess. I was wearing my black leather jacket and feeling a tad out of place. I liked it, though, and was pretty much hooked on the move. During our weekend tour, we went all over the bay area and Kristi Jo was looking like a pretty good roommate. I liked the duplex she lived in and I also liked pretty much all of the people she introduced me to.

Now all I had to do was figure out how to get enough money to make the move properly and break the news to my family and friends...and oh yeah...also tell Alexa I was moving. We were in a very on-again, off-again, sort of phase in our relationship. I’m pretty sure we were officially broken up, but I can’t remember exactly since I was pretty drunk most of the time.

I also had to break the news to Steve. He had just rented an apartment in the same building I lived in and we had huge plans for being excellent neighbors.

missed a thursday

yesterday was a good day, I think...not quite sure yet. I enjoyed spending a lot of quality time with Liam, but I got jipped on spending the time with Ryan I was looking forward to. Teresa was in good spirits, too, the little trooper. She has a nasty little diaper rash.

I watched this film called "high school confidential" last night. It was freaking hilarious. Made in 1958 it is either the best spoof of the "drug" movies of the time or it is most inept attempt to scare kids "straight" ever. I highly recommend watching it if you have the chance and I am going to look for a dvd of this so I can enjoy it again and again. Uncle Fester is in this film, so is Drew Barrymore’s dad, Michael Landon, and Mamie Van Doren.

Today...hmmn...I’ve been working on some evaluation material for work and I’m about to work on my powerpoint. Fun. Babies are sleeping, for now, but will be up at any time. I’m actually getting a bit anxious for them to wake up as I feel like I haven’t gotten much baby time this week.

so. let’s see. Worked on some paperwork today and did a little more work on the screenplay I started yesterday. I have no idea how to write a screenplay, so I’m just doing it the way it makes sense to me to do it. I’m definitely not posting it here. the jews are nice people. I was just kidding about blaming them...except for the death of Jesus and the proliferation of an anti-anti-semetic media.

today was a long day. the back was killing me all night and I got no sleep. MOD was funny for about 5 minutes, so I left. NSK played a good set, though, in my opinion and I am beginning to think that practice is truly over-rated.

The kids were good today. The ones I’m paid to talk to. I almost look forward to seeing them again tomorrow.

I’m blaming the jews. That’s right. It’s all their fault. Another holiday to blame on the jews. If they were better at marketing, we’d all be jewish.

The eggs have all been found. There was some cute moments, for sure, like how Teresa would say, "okay" every time she found an egg and put it in her little egg bag. I feel like a bad daddy since I had no basket for her. The other kids had baskets. I’m sure Teresa will have one for next year. Liam stayed back with mama during the egg hunt and sang her songs.

We had a nice evening last night. Some fine folks came over for a little potluck and baby talk. It was good to see Scott, Amy and Jack, as well as Amber and Monkey. Good people. You should invite them to your house, too.

Gig tonight at the Stray Cat. I don’t think I will even bother singing backup vocals. No one will hear them anyway. Going to rock, though, and get home early.

Epiphany is not just a name for a beautiful black child anymore

So I had an epiphany this morning. I do not have to take the bullshit of a certain angry woman anymore. I don’t need it, want it, nor have any reason to take it for the rest of my life and I’m damn happy about that. I have given up on the idea of ever being able to be civil and from this day forward, I am free from any burden of guilt, ignorance or a combination of the two that I have allowed myself to feel the need to take part in.

Yay.

Totimoshi was great last night. I really like their new stuff a lot and it was good to see old friends. Good folks, Totimoshi, and if you ever have the chance to go and see them, do it. Tell them I said hello, too.

shower thoughts

I often do some of my best thinking in the shower. Who knows why, but I do. Today I was reflecting, again, on my grandmother Val’s 90th birthday party. It was awesome to see her so happy. I may have mentioned that in a previous blog, but it really was great to see my grandmother truly happy. I don’t know that I’ve seen her that happy since my grandfather died.

Anywho, it got me thinking about my grandparents on the R side and how their house is the only constant in my life. It’s the only place that has not changed in my lifetime. The only significant change, and of course, it is a very significant change, is that my grandfather Jack died in 1999. Every other family member I have has moved. I have moved 25 times, for example, and so many other things have changed. It got me wondering what would happen to that house when my grandmother either dies or can’t live alone anymore. I don’t really want to think of either thing, but life continues to move on, regardless of what we want to slow down or stop.

My grandmother Val is a very special lady. I wish I knew her better. I’m the only one who can change that....

Blogging for food

it’s lunch time and I’m hungry. The cable guy is here and he’s going to hook us up with some new outlets. Poor bastard is roaming around in the attic. Luckily, it’s pretty nice outside in Phoenix today.

Weekend was good, I guess. Got the drums done on Saturday for the new Pinky cd/7". Got one guitar done yesterday. Bass will be done in a couple of weeks as Byron is a busy bee.

Gramma’s birthday party was also incredibly swell. The Reardon clan was in very good spirits, all the way around, so it was nice to be with them, however briefly. Got to meet the new BF of my fab cousin Linda. He seems like a very nice guy. I look forward to getting to know him some more.

Liam is making some incredibly cute noises right now, so this blog is done. Time to hang with my favorite 7 month old.

now that’s the way...

last night ended up being pretty damn good....especially the end of the evening.

we decided to get some new windows for the house. I think it’ll help the look and the bills. I also put up two ceiling fans yesterday. Not so hard....now the other 5 have to do, well, at least two of them are going to suck really bad.

The Suns played a good second half last night. Good to see them acting like they care. Fucking referees...

Weirdo Irish punk rock thingy tonight....Not really looking forward to it, but whatever. I’ll be a good doobie and drink uber-responsibly.

story time

there once lived a creature so mystifiying, so miraculous, that the only name fitting for him was bob. bob lived in a small hole, covered from the heat of the sun by several very tall reeds, on the edge of a medium sized bog. his bog was nothing special, but it certainly did offer him a variety of food and entertainment. bob was big on entertainment and food. in fact, if you asked bob about his favorite things, he would probably say, "food and entertainment, dear boy (or girl, depending on the apparent gender of the creature doing the asking)." some days, entertainment might come before food, but this would be the case, most likely, only if bob had just recently eaten.

the days at the bog could be long ones, so entertainment was not only welcome, but it was also a necessity. in those days, there were very few creatures like bob left living on the bog, so conversations were rare. most people living near the bog had no idea about bob, or his fellow frog-mice, and would never have thought to stop by and call his name to offer a bit of a chat or share an interesting anecdote. bob was a big fan of the interesting anecdote. he considered this one of the grandest forms of entertainment.

bob was a frog-mouse, part frog and part mouse, just like you surmised. they were definitely some sort of evolutionary accident, or if you prefer, a not so gentle reminder of the days when inter-species love was not frowned upon nearly as much as it is today. his tiny body possessed two exceptionally powerful rear legs, a skin not unlike that of a seal, but also with a fine layer of nearly waterproof fur. His face was the perfect combination of mouse and frog, with no discernable nose, yet still very appealing. frog-mice were handsome creatures and they knew it. this fact often was often a part of their charm and played a large role in their continual quest for entertainment.

frog-mice were also blessed with the ability to speak. considering their small stature, they had fairly faint voices, but bob was a frog-mouse who could really use his voice to his advantage. perhaps this blessing was bestowed upon them for finding out, many moons ago, that frogs and mice were kindred spirits. perhaps it was just a fluke, much like the way the frog-mice eventually settled on using the english language. frog-mice were also excellent readers, so their love of the works of William Shakespeare may have played a role in their decision to adopt english as their not quite official language, but no one really knows for sure. frog-mice are not particularly good at remembering history, plus they love to entertain, so you never really know if they are telling you the real story or one that sounds good to them at the time.

bob had lived on the bog for quite awhile when I came to know about him. ours was a tenuous relationship at best when we first met. I had definitely never seen anything like him before and have yet to see anything or anyone like him since. I stumbled upon him as he was finishing up a very successful hunting trip. bob enjoyed his food, as I may have mentioned, and for a frog-mouse, food does not just magically appear. bob did not particulary enjoy the act of hunting, per se, but he did sometimes enjoy using his voice to frighten his prey before letting his charm finish the job.

you see, after he would frighten his prey, he would apologize profusely, doing his best imitation of a fumbling Mel Torme. he would use his rich baritone to calm whatever type of small water bug or cricket or cockroach he was stalking. bob would occasionally break out into song, which would often confuse his prey and allow him to get close enough to use his talented tongue for something slightly more sinister. bob was omnivorous, but he prefered living flesh. he would, you know, for health reasons, occasionally eat the local fruit and vegetables available to him, but he was most attracted to a nice piece of meat.

Sometimes I wonder about my peers in the world of prevention.....I wonder why they come and sit around the table. The $$$ are so scarce these days in what we do that you could imagine everyone being a group of great white sharks circling a lonely tuna. The Jaws theme music would be playing in the background and then......WHAM!!! George W. Bush would dive in the water and snatch the tuna before any of us sharks can react. "This tuna is going to Iraq," he would say, even though we could all see tuna sandwiches in his pockets.

well....well....well.

The work front is murky, but not drastic. In a weird way, they are giving me a raise, but they expect me to work for it. Is that not crazy? Work for the money they give me? Wow. I never would have thought of it. The murky part is that I have no idea where this money is going to come from and I don't know if my does either. The job search continues....

I think Rhondi had a nice birthday. She's going shopping today with the gift card I got her from the art supply store. I hope she brings home some goodies that will make her happy. She's blow drying her hair now. I remember hearing that sound when I was growing up and thinking it would never end. The end of the dryer usually meant my mother and I would soon be going somewhere, which, in my youth, often meant shopping. Some of those trips to the store were quite good, at least for me, as my mom never seemed to mind buying me things.

Despise You is playing tonight. Ten years ago I would have been all over this show. I pulled out my Despise You cd, though, the other day and I'm not sure I would enjoy this show as much now as then. I'm sure it will be good...but good enough to get me out of the house and to a sweaty little all-ages establishment? I don't think so. I know RYAN BUTLER, GOD OF THE GUITAR AND SUCH, would be disappointed that I am feeling my age and all, but that's ok. I can live with it. I would like to finally see Landmine Marathon, though.

She has taught me so much about life, love, and how to share a life with someone else. She's the bravest, smartest, and most beautiful woman I have ever known. Without being corny or wanting to quote Jack Nicholson (from As Good As It Gets), she truly does make me want to be a better man.

Charlie Ocher

I didn't know until just now that Charlie Ocher of the Sun City Girls died last year. I was in my own death funk last February, so even if I did hear it, I probably didn't file it away. I didn't know Charlie Ocher personally, but he was my favorite part about watching the Sun City Girls when I was a youngster. I remember seeing them play at the Mason Jar when I was about 15 and he was drooling onto his snare drum so much that the drool would spray out when he hit it. I thought that was one of the punkest things I had ever seen.

More recently, the SCG played a show in Portland when I was there for Stevie's wedding. We had to go, of course, and the SCG were in fine form. I was glad to have experienced them again on that trip as I thought I would probably not get a chance to see them again after their last trip to the Valley. I wish more people would have gotten the chance to see them. They were an amazing band and Charlie was a truly awesome drummer.

speaking of scars...

So Markus, Teresa, Jennifer and I went out to PV one day in '87, probably, to skate a pool that was right near the southwestern edge of Roadrunner park. It was huge and looked like so much fun. I put my pads on and got ready for my first run, only to hit a kink in the bottom that sent me straight into the wall of the pool. It took down my pad on my left knee and put a half dollar size hole in my knee. Okay..maybe a quarter, but it was still a pretty huge hole. I was done for the day, and since the pool was kind of a bust, we didn't stay long. I got another nice juicy skateboarding scar out of that one. I think Teresa took a picture of it while we were driving back to our neck of the woods. I wonder if she still has it. Probably not...

Anyhow, that is not the end of this scars story. About a year and half later, we went out to Thrasherland one night. I think it was Ben, myself, and probably Paul Daniel. We were skating the ramps and having a good ol' time. There was almost no one else there, so we had the run of the park. I was skating the Palo Verde ramp, which seemed like it was 20 feet high. I'm guessing it was more like 12', but whatever. I was working it pretty well and getting higher and higher when I fell off my board and landed directly on my left knee. It felt like I got hit in the knee with a baseball bat. I pulled down my pad to look at my knee because I could just tell something was terribly wrong. There, in my pad, was the complete scar from the above mentioned incident in the PV pool. I blew it completely off and the wound was back again.

Luckily, Thrasherland had bandaids, so I put one on, put the pad back on, and continued to skate until we had to leave. It was definitely sore for awhile, and the scar came back. I wonder what I did with the one that came off....I can't remember.

I hope I ate it.

nose hairs

Getting older is so much fun....I really enjoy it. I like that fairly often, I have to pull hairs out of my nose because they have grown so long they stick out of my nostrils. I don't ever want to be one of those guys who walks around with nose hair proudly waving in the wind. I wouldn't, no, couldn't ever be proud of that, unless it was so long that it made...no....I can't even go on.
The aches and pains and such, I knew those were coming. Everyday I wake up and realize that skateboarding so much when I was younger has taken its toll on me. The worst part of it, in retrospect, is that I'm banged the hell up, but I was never even very good. The guys who have been falling from 15 feet in the air for many years have got to be messed up.
Mark is the one who taught me to appreciate skateboarding. I was really leery of this sport until I started spending time with him and Ben at the Henderson Hacienda up on Nicolet. I had a bad experience with skateboarding when I was in 6th grade, so somewhere around the spring of 81. Some of the neighbor kids and I, I believe there names were Gary and Tom decided to do some catamaran-ing, where you sat on your board and went down the hill. I was always in the middle because I had the least experience. Well, the one time I was on the edge, I panicked and put my hand down on the ground to stop....

It kills me just to even type about it now. My natural instinct is to jerk my hands away from the typewriter and run and scream. I shit you not...

It fucking hurt....and yes, the swear words are necessary and appropriate. I still have the scars, which some of you have even seen. My hand burned. It was bloody. It was scary as hell. I ran to the sprinkler, which was on full blast in the front yard of the apartments we lived in (more on those, later) and stuck my hand directly into the spray. I think that act saved me a lot of grief in the coming weeks, actually. Any hint of infection was probably blown away by the water, as well as excess gravel. I ran to our home and my dad was entertaining some friends. I can't remember who, but whatever. He was pretty concerned, but there was nothing that could be done, since the wounds were too big to be stitched. He gave me a tylenol 3 with codeine (my first actual drug experience-thanks dad, no wonder I like codeine so much) and I floated away.

The scabs took six weeks to finally go and underneath, when they fell off, I had the nicest, fluffiest scar tissue you have ever seen. If they made pillows out of this stuff, they would cost 1000 dollars because they would be so fluffy and comfortable. I was sure, though, that I would have this horribly disfigured hand for the rest of my life. The scars were, at least in my eyes, really noticeable and it would make me nauseous just to think about how I got them. Like I wrote earlier, it was hard to type about the accident, even just a few minutes ago.

The body does indeed have a memory.

The Trouble with Harry

I really enjoy this film. I know it is not thought of as one of Hitchcock's best, but I enjoy it. It's is delightfully entertaining and I recommend it to all. I used to watch it and wish I could be as much of a sarcastic dickhead as John Forsyth is, but I'm way too nice.

NO comments necessary on my niceness or my use of sarcasm, either.

Today I meet again with the sexual harasser guy and also with a group of young ladies (and maybe gentlemen) who have experienced sexual violence. I plan on asking this group of young people how they would do my job and what they think I should be telling their peers. It should be an interesting hour.

My boss wants to meet with me about how I'm going to keep my level of income up to par as I switch from being a salaried employee to being an hourly one. I'm not happy about this, but all good things come to an end, I suppose. Should be an interesting meeting.

Time to shave and shower...I've already sudoku-ed.

Sunday morning and the dog is smiling at me

Calvin has this weird little smile that looks like he's insane, but it is also very, very loving. His lower teeth sort of stick out of his doggy mouth and it makes me feel very comforted when he is so happy.

Mr Baby Man is having a bottle. His got 4 or 5 more clean ones, so he's good for now, but there will be bottle washing today, for sure. Teresa is still sleeping, but not for long. The wifey is also sleeping. She stayed up late doing homework. I think I'll make waffles for Teresa and I for breakfast.

Things are cooking.....I think my blogs in the coming week will be a bit more exciting. I hope I have time to really sit down and write.

skipped a day

Friday was a bit of a long day, but it ended well. Elise and I had some father/daughter time and watched "Little Big Man"...she liked it a lot and I remembered why it was one of my favorite films. Mr Baby Man got some shots during the afternoon, so he slept through the entire movie (and the whole night, for that matter). He was very brave through the shot process and only cried a little. Teresa went with us to the doctor and she was fairly well behaved. Managing two babies is thing of pure skill, and I don't quite have the skills I need just yet. I'm pretty good with one, though. Teresa onl made it through the first hour of LBM, then she conked out and went to bed.

I had an interesting day at work. I met with a young man who has been in serious trouble for sexual harassment at his school. We had a long talk about harassment and different ways he could learn to stop himself before saying or doing things that might make someone uncomfortable.
I think I may like the counseling side of things, so who knows...after Rhondi is done with her schooling, maybe I will look into a counseling degree.

Today I'm going to take Mr Baby Man to target and Costco, and we'll probably go and visit the Granny. I'm looking forward to a mellow day and an even mellower weekend.

the work front is crazy. I am so ready to turn in my resignation, but I have yet to find a new job, so I am stuck. I need to attack the job front in the coming weeks, so I can get back on a healthy professional track. I love what I do, but I don't love getting screwed around.

Piece of mind is a valuable thing.

Thursday.

Thursday, to me, means the day to talk specifically about sexual violence (at least for now). Thursdays have been this way now for around 10 years, so I have spent somewhere around 500 Thursdays teaching kids about sexual violence, what it is, how to protect themselves from it, and how to help a friend who may have experienced some type of it. Considering that I speak to usually 3 or 4 classes about these issues everyday, then I'm getting close to 2000 times I have had this discussion. Maybe that's enough....I don't think so, though. I think this discussion should be had a lot more. If more people were willing to talk to children about these issues, sexual violence would not happen nearly as often as it does.

two easy, one hard

The two sudokus this morning were pretty fun. One was easy, one was kinda difficult, so there was, at least, one sort of fun pre-blog challenge.
There are only 3 clean bottles at this point, so I'm starting to sweat a little.

I'm really enjoying the show, "Breaking Bad." I can't quite place where I've seen the lead female character before, and it's bothering me. The show is quite entertaining though and even though I was never really a tweeker, I think it captures the essence of the tweeker pretty well.

I had strange dreams last night. Artistic dreams and travel dreams and Christmas dreams (with snow, even). Some interesting people showed up in my dreams. Some were nice to see, some weren't...but it is funny how the memories fade so quickly with dreams. As I write this, I'm struggling to remember just who was there. I know the missus was, and that's all that matters. She and I were in San Francisco having fun....I remember that much.

Today I will talk to the 7th graders again. They are a pretty funny bunch of kids this week. I like them. There are a few that a real heart blessers and it's good to see some hope for the future. The last few weeks have been kinda dismal in that particular capacity.

scrambled morning thoughts

I guess it was just for me. I basically was talking about the academy awards, my day yesterday, the weird, random thoughts I think in the mornings when I wake up to feed Mr. Baby Man and I can't fall right back to sleep, and some memories of the short-lived band I was in, Son of Crackpipe.

the ability to dissect the inane from the accurate

so I'm obsessed, also, with doing sudoku doing those private moments where a man (or woman) purges their body of waste. It has overtaken reading as the prime occupier of my attention while I take a dump. I've learned that the real key to being a successful sudoku practioner is the ability to take a wild guess or leap of faith every once in awhile. I hate doing that. I want the correct answer all of the time and this guessing business is something I'm not good at. I wish I was better at it, but when it comes to gambling, I've found that my instinct is usually wrong. I wonder why this is? In many ways, I think I've been quite lucky with certain instincts, but when it comes to any type of gamble, I have no luck and usually pick the wrong thing. I also am completely addicted, thanks to Steve, to minesweeper. I play endless games of minesweeper, and my guessing there, is probably less than 50% accurate. What does this say and what am I trying to learn? Am I insane? I keep doing the same things and apparently am expecting some sort of different outcome. I'm starting to realize that some day, I will die and before I do, I will (maybe) have the hellish realization that I spent an inordinate amount of time in my life in solitary battle with unfulfilling demons. When I was young, I invented dice games to pass my time. As an only child, and also as a person with not a tremendous amount of self-confidence, I spent a lot of time playing alone and, as I was want to do, finding ways to keep myself entertained. I played endless hours of nerf basketball and baseball in my room. I had full games and kept statistics. I have been enamored by sports statistics since I was small and I'm convinced that learning how to keep sports statistics helped me learn how to do math more than any teacher ever did. Anyhow, one off-shoot of this particular obsession was the creation of dice games. It is amazing what one can do with two dice, a piece of paper, and a pencil. I still get the urge, every once in awhile, to play one of the games I made up. I suppose they were of great comfort to me. I would play these games for hours and hours. I bet, if I could add it all up, I have spent close to a year or so of my life in total hours. I was a Suns, Dodger, and Raider fan growing up, so when I played my basketball, baseball, and football games, you can guess who usually won. Sometimes I cheated and made my teams win, sometimes I stopped myself from cheating and let the dice really decide. It was interesting, I guess, and it was a way to pass the time without thinking about anything that was bothering me. Why do I do this? Why don't I spent the time doing more meaningful things?

I just typed "games" instead of things before I edited myself....what the hell does that mean? More meaningful games? Is that how I view life, as some sort of game? If this is true, then why don't I play to win more often?

more baby bottle OCD nightmares

so I realized this afternoon that everytime I need to fill a baby bottle or even go into our little kitchen (as some of you know, we have a big kitchen and a little kitchen) I count the friggin' baby bottles to see if any are missing and how many I have left before I need to wash them again. I am going completely nuts. I feel like the bottle slavery has seriously gone to my head. I need to obsess about something a bit more productive, I think, even though the bottles are necessary to the health and happiness of my little loves.

I'VE COUNTED THE BOTTLES AT LEAST 5 TIMES TODAY.

I've known for awhile now that I have little peccadilloes and I've probably got some level of OCD and ADD and I'm definitely a potential schizophrenic thanks to years of LSD abuse, but this bottle thing has me freaking convinced and freaking out a bit. How do I stop obsessing? Liam's going to be drinking formula for at least another 5 or 6 months and Teresa is still very fond of her bottle at nap and bedtimes. I need help.

Speaking of multiple personalities and voices in my head, I've also realized that I really like to write(again and again and again...Thank you Myspace Blog action). I am thinking about writing about these "other" people some time, maybe even soon. There are some stories to tell, for sure, and maybe practicing by telling true stories will warm me up for telling the made up ones.

no idea where this one is going...

but the babies are asleep and I'm awake, so I have some free time.

I've been thinking about a lot of things, lately, and I've yet to come to any conclusions. The work situation is so weird. My boss is practically begging me not to quit, but I kind of want to. I need to find the new sitch before I do, but...I do want to do something different.

I haven't played my bass (except for a few minutes at home) since the first week of January. I don't remember the last time I went this long. I don't really miss it, which kind of bums me out. We're going to start the new Pinky recording on March 15, with Byron Villain, so that's kind of interesting, but we haven't all been in the same room since our band meeting back in late December or early January. I'm having a hard time remembering some of the riffs we're going to record. Looks like NSK has another show booked, this time with Skarhead. We'll play with MOD and Skarhead all in the course of a few weeks time. Are we lucky or what?

I don't think luck has anything to do with it, actually. Danny has everything to do with it and I'm cool with that. They should both be fun shows to play.

The storm was kind of cool last night. The dogs were nervous, of course, and I think the thunder kind of scared Teresa and Liam. Teresa was wild. Must've been the lunar eclipse. I could have enjoyed the Suns game a bit more if they had won, but I'm beginning to think that none of that stuff really matters, anyway. hmmn...beginning to think....no, I know none of it really matters. The Suns window of opportunity, which was really more of a peephole, is closing quickly. The Lakers are pretty damn good. Shaq was fun and all, but they have to learn how to play together before we'll really know if it was a good trade.

I can't remember where I left off with my storytelling....I think I would like to tell the story of when Michael and Brian and I went to Disneyland.

It had to be somewhere in the Spring of 89. I was living in the Lanai apartments on 7th ave and Earll. I had a studio there and was pretty happy to be living by myself. Mike and Brian had taken over an apartment that Bonnie and Matt were living in on Clarendon. It was a couple of months after we had all moved out of the apartment on 27th St and Clarendon, which I told you all about before.

One night we were all drinking and doing bad things over at Mike and Brian's...I had an opportunity for a ride home, forget from who, but I took it. I didn't like getting stuck over there as I kinda like to sleep in my own bed and it was too far to walk, at least for me. Anyhow, I'd just gotten home and the phone rang. Brian or Mike, I can't remember, was shouting into the phone that we were going to Disneyland. I was not into it. I had something like $28 dollars to my name and a trip to Disneyland was not in the budget, nor did I want to go to LA with no money to spend, even though I didn't really have anything else to do.

I told them no....hung up the phone...then thought about it. Brian had plenty of money and it's not like I wouldn't find some more cash when I got home. I didn't really want to go to class the next day, so what the hell? I called them back and said, "pick me up on the way out of town" to which Mike replied, "we knew you were going to call...and besides, we were going to come get you anyway."

Brian had recently purchased an older 280z that had belonged to Mike's girlfriend, Nora. There is another story to tell about that Z, but not now. Anyhow, the boys showed up around 3am and we got in the Z to head to California. We figured we'd get to Disneyland in time for it to open. As Brian was driving out of town, we got to 315th ave and he decided he could not drive any more. I was already getting sleepy myself, so it was up to Mike to get us to Disneyland. We pulled off the freeway at the exit there (315th ave). It was so dark you could not see anything a foot in front of you. Brian turned off the car to do the switch and when Mike went to turn it back on, there was nothing.

Now Nora's car was known for having it's odd little quirks, so we weren't too worried or upset, but it was a bad thing to be stranded out in the middle of nowhere. It had to be late February or March, because I remember it being cold out there. After about 10 minutes or so, the car started right up. The smart thing to do would have been to turn around and go home, but we'd already gone that far....it was too late to turn back.

We were off....and doing wonderfully, I might add. We left Arizona without a hitch and were rolling through the middle of Southern California making great time. We were going to get there with time to spare....at least until the flat tire. I think we were somewhere outside of the greater palm springs area when the tire died. We had a fair amount of drugs on us (pot, mushrooms, probably a little coke, etc.), so when the highway patrol pulled up, we were a bit nervous. We were on the side of the highway arguing because the Nora-mobile had no spare tire. We were fucked. The highway patrol officer took pity on us, though, and drove Brian into the nearest town to get a tire. It was early morning and as soon as Brian and the officer drove off, Mike and I decided to smoke a joint. It was so nice and calm out there in the desert. Cars were streaming by and the sun was just coming up. We had a great many laughs, if I remember correctly, about how Brian must be shitting his pants in the truck with the pig.

About 45 minutes or so later, Brian comes rolling back up with a new tire. We made Mike change the tire, and somewhere I have a picture of this, and we were off again. Luckily the nora-mobile fired right up when we were ready to leave. We made it to Anaheim about 9:30ish, and Disneyland opened at 10am. I think it was a Tuesday, if I remember correctly. We went to Arby's to get some breakfast so the mushrooms would have something to roll around in our belly's with, and we headed to the park.

Disneyland is a sight to behold under the influence of magic mushrooms. I can tell you, in all honesty, that I had never seen anything quite like it before and I'd been to Disneyland quite a few times before this. We were having a blast. We went on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, Space Mountain, Haunted Mansion, etc, and were probably not doing a very good job of keeping it together. I had a butthole surfers t-shirt on, which was typical for me in 1989, so I was not making parents too happy. I specifically remember getting some dirty looks while in line for Mr. Toad and all I could do was giggle.

We decided to take a little break, so we took a trip on the Skyride. It was very relaxing and we decide to smoke a quick joint. Everything was fine for me until we got off the ride. The attendant smiled and said enjoy your day at Disneyland, then got a whiff of what we'd been up to. He turned on us like cornered lion and said, "DO NOT SMOKE POT AT DISNEYLAND. DO NOT RIDE THE SKYRIDE AGAIN. IF WE CATCH YOU SMOKING POT AT DISNEYLAND AGAIN, YOU WILL BE ARRESTED."

This was a bit of a bummer at first, but by the time we were finished with the next ride, we were laughing about it. We were followed, though, during the day by Disney security. It just made things a bit more interesting. What a day it was...Disneyland closed at 6, so we had an evening in LA to kill. We decided to drive to the beach and try to find a motel. We found a burger shop and discovered that they sold beer. We were all either 18 or 19, but we figured, "what the fuck" and each ordered a large budlight with our burgers. The girls at the shop must've liked us because there was no carding or anything like that. We were in heaven. The food was good and after a day of shrooming at Disneyland, the beer tasted even better. We had several more...

Then we found a liquor store on highway 1 that also sold to us. I had a fake id, but it was not necessary. The dude at the liquor store told us about a cheap motel that was right on the water, so we headed over there. It was perfect. For like $45 we got a room with two bedrooms. I had my own room, so I was stoked. I think M and B wanted to stay up and do some blow or something, but after many beers, I was ready to pass out. We woke up in the morning and Mike and I walked down to the water with some of the leftover beers and smoked a joint. It was one of the best mornings I had had at that point. We went back and woke up Brian, since he had to experience the beauty we'd just enjoyed. I have pictures of this as well....I think one of us twisted our ankle pretty good going through the rocks, but I don't remember who it was....anyhow, it was time to go back to Phoenix. None of us enjoyed the drive home very much. I think we may have gone to Hollywood for a bit first...yep, we did. My most clear memory of the ride home is trying to sleep in the backseat and Mike was playing the first Danzig record way too loud. I hated that man then...kinda like now....Danzig has sucked for a long time.

Brian and I went back to California not too long after this...but that is another story.

Little Teresa is not well today. She's got an ear infection. We've been to the doctor and now it is time for antibiotics and rest. She's a little trooper, though, rallying every chance she gets to have a bit of fun or make a joke for daddy.

I'm so lucky. Liam is cutting teeth, but doing it so bravely. He's also in the mode of rallying when he's down and getting a smile for me. I think they both know that something is wrong with momma.

Saturday afternoon and I'm waiting for the dishwater to cool off so I can wash the babies bottles. Teresa and I had a nice visit with her old babysitter, Karen. Then we had some french fries and she got to have a nap. I was thinking about doing the nap thing, then I got came in here and got on the computer. I'm also doing laundry. The other bane of my existence. I have become a bit laundry fanatical. I may have some sort of OCD when it comes to clean clothes these days. I wonder what that says about my current mental state. MUST HAVE CLEAN CLOTHES!!@!!!!!!

Aeesh.

Big staff meeting at work on Monday. I'm wondering what will be said and who will say it. My boss keeps trying to convince me to stick it out and stay. I think I may just do that, but I don't know if I really want to. There may be some cool opportunities knocking on my door....

I wish my friends from Blanche Davidian well. They were a very good band and it sucks to see them go. They had a good run, though, better than most bands, and I hope they are proud of the records they made and the shows they did. They are all great guys, at least from my perspective, and have a lot to offer the music community. I hope they all continue playing. I'm very proud that I got to play with them (and play what was maybe their final show).

Today will be an interesting day. I have to go and do an intervention with a young man who has been in some serious trouble for sexual harassment/sexual abuse. It should be very interesting. I think I will use our time today as a getting to know each other time and see where that takes us. I don't really want to go in there with both guns blazing and tell him he's an idiot pervert.

And, at least, I get paid for this one.

It's Valentines Day...I'm so happy to have a house full of wonderful Valentines. Teresa liked her present very much and I'm hoping the Bizzo will like hers.

so the opportunity...

It looks like I might be needing a new job. The universe is telling me to move on and the opportunity to make a new start or continue what I've been doing on my own or with another agency is what I have to figure out. I'm really not sure what I want to do. I love teaching kids, but thanks to NCLB, I have no desire to be a classroom teacher. I love speaking to people about relationships and I'm especially fond of the field I'm currently (relationship violence prevention), but going out on my own in a month or so is something I'm not really prepared for.

But the universe is telling me to do something new....so that's what I'm going to do. Just not sure what yet....I like working with people, I know that, and I like the idea of speaking to any size group of people about things I believe in...maybe I've been luckier than most and gotten to do something I love and believe in for 10 years now. I'm not completely sure if my agency is going to go bye bye or not, but the writing is on the wall to do something different. I would like to see my job keep going for at least another couple of years, but it's not looking good.

I'm not bummed, though....because I can do anything I have to do, and if I can't do something else I love, I can at least be working towards getting back to doing something I love as quickly as possible.

and, oh yeah....fuck George W. Bush.

grabbing the moment and shaking it until it grins like a bastard

For whatever reason, and no, I haven't been reading too much into my horoscope, I feel like there is an opportunity looming over my doorstep and it is about time to grab it. I'm really not sure what is coming and I don't even know that it is good, but I feel like it will be good. I will surely write about it when it comes or I'll write about my disappointment that nothing came my way. Either way, you win, I win, and we all win.

Today was a long day. I'm sad for the youth of Glendale today. At least the ones at the school I was at...They are a tough crowd. I will have to work my butt off to help this particular school in the coming years. I think, though, that change can happen for them.

I think I might need to take a crap now.

in the interest of interesting things

I just bought a book called "The films of Burt Reynolds" and it is at least 25 years old. I can't wait to look at it and hopefully, some day, get it signed by the B man himself. He didn't write it, but what the hell? It wouldn't exist withouth him...and his genius.

I bought the little patient some presents too...I wish she would get some resolution on her back and soon. She is getting better, though. The sleep, thanks to the pills, is helping her a great deal. I think she gets more sleep than me these days. It's about time.

I can't believe Shaq plays for the Suns now.

I'm making dinner (leftovers) so I guess I should go get Teresa out of bed and heat up the oven. My little T is a good napper after a hard day of play. I can't believe how lucky I am. Today is a day where I feel incredibly lucky. Even when things aren't going so well in some directions, it is amazing that one can feel so good about life.

damn it..broke my streak...have to start a new one. Spent most of the afternoon in the ER and learned nothing new about Rhondi's back. Great.
Have to work today and worry about her being in pain....things could be worse, I know, but I don't like the idea of her being in pain at all, especially when there is not a lot I can do to help.

The enemies got the better of me yesterday, I'm afraid....

not much to say today

well...hmmn. Super Sunday. Yeah. Kinda weird, but today was about as far from a Super Sunday as it could be. Nothing like spending the day in Urgent Care. Rhondi's back is all messed up. Send her some good thoughts as she's in a lot of pain. I would have liked to have spent the day in bed as my sinuses are completely screwed and I've continued with the dizziness and nausea related to a head that wants to implode or explode or just fuck right off. I couldn't even eat today worth a crap and I'm running on fumes. I've had the chills off and on for a couple of days now and the worst night sweats I've had in a long time. I think the wife and I will both be visiting the doctor tomorrow.

I'm off to bed.

and yeah, I'm surprised the Giants pulled it out. I didn't get to see any of the commercials, really...I wonder if there were any good ones?

it was one year ago today

My mom called me in the early am one year ago today to tell me my grandfather had died. It seems surreal that it has been one year and one day since I saw him last and spoke to him, held his hand, and heard him say, "I love you and God bless you, son." I miss him everyday. The world is not as good of a place without him in it. I know he was suffering and I know we all have to go, but the wish to talk to him again will never go away. It was the first thing I thought about this morning. I wondered what I would write about him and now I'm just going to let it flow.

He was a very kind and generous person. We spent a great deal of time together when I was a youth and even though I wish I would have spent more time with him as an adult, I think we spent a good deal of time sitting and talking to each other over the last 8 or 9 years he was alive. He had a great sense of humor and told excellent stories. His youth was spent around Oklahoma and he would tell me tales of his early days working for the electric company delivering bills, as well as being a caddy and playing as much golf as he could. He was a scratch golfer, which ironically means he carried no handicap. As many of you know, my grandfather spent most of the last 60 years of his life in a wheelchair after breaking his back in a car accident while he was in the Army.

He flew P-47s and would tell me tales of learning how to fly and how he was going to have to go to Japan and be a part of world war II when he had his accident. My grandmother told me once on the sly that this wasn't entirely true (about going to fight), but then again, my grandfather loved a good story and was not afraid of a little embellishment for the sake of creating some nice drama. He met Dizzy Dean, among other pro baseball players, when he was a boy and he loved to talk about their conversation. He was a huge sports fan and I spent many Suns games walking back and forth between my seat next to my dad and my grandfather's seat in the handicapped section of the Coliseum. We would all ride together down to the games and in those days, there wasn't a whole lot of handicap parking at the Coliseum, so we almost always got to park in the front row. I wanted to take him to a Dbacks game, but we never got to do that. I think he would have really liked it. He was as pleased as anyone else when they won the world series. I wish he could have lived to see a Suns championship. Sometimes I wonder if I will live to see one....

I can't imagine having a better father and I know my mom, my aunt, and my uncle joe were all very devoted to him. I'm sure he had his flaws, but I don't think any of them ever found it easy to stay mad at him. I'm sure I was mad at him at times, but I honestly can't recall ever being upset with him. I definitely miss how supportive he was about my musical aspirations. He was my biggest supporter and I think he was proud of my accomplishments, even if he may have also wished I would have put my time and effort into other things. I think he understood that playing music was just simply a part of who I am and you cannot easily deny yourself these types of things in life. He was a devoted Catholic and his faith, I believe, served him well in his life. I am often jealous of his unwavering faith. I simply don't have it in me.

Rhondi and I gave Liam my grandfather's middle name, Vincent, as one way of paying tribute to him and keeping him alive. It makes me sad that Teresa and Liam are named after people they will never have met. I can't wait to tell Liam about the man whose name he shares. I wish I would have told my grandfather about Liam before he died, but had only just found out. Things were so up in the air back then with my job and everything else that we didn't want to stress him out about us having another child. If there is a heaven and such, then he knows anyway. He's looking out for his littlest great grand son and he will inspire myself and others to do the same type of things he would have done if he had the chance.

From Kindergarten to 8th grade, my grandfather drove me to school almost every day (unless I rode my bike) and picked me up pretty often as well. He would tell me stories on the way to school when I was little and make me giggle at every opportunity. We swam in the summer time and he was at every little league game. One time he must have had a few scotches before the game and he ended up getting kicked out of the field for being belligerant to the umpire. I liked getting kicked out games when I was a boy, so I was secretly proud of my papa for mouthing off. He would sit, usually, right behind the umpire and he had 20/15 vision for almost all his life, so he could probably see the balls and strikes better than the poor guy who was probably getting paid peanuts to call our games.

We spent a lot of time playing ping pong, monopoly, chess, cards, whatever. He was a natural competitor. He taught me how to compete fairly and that there was no joy in cheating or not giving it your best shot. He would not let me win, ever, and when I did finally start beating him in the occasional game, I knew I had earned it. He was also just as happy to have me win as he was to be the victor, which made me feel like I had earned some respect from him. I was always happy to make my grandfather proud. I wish I had done more of it....I'd like think I did make him proud, more often than not. I know he did not agree with many of the decisions I made and I know I let him down on many occasions. I screwed up a few opportunities he gave me quite royally and will regret it for the rest of my life....but I know carrying those things around does nobody any good, and he wouldn't want me worrying about them now. He would have wanted me to have learned from my mistakes and decided to do things differently in the future.

I did, Papa, and I have....I miss you and I love you.

another Friday, another bit of arthritis

anyhow, the Suns game did not go as planned. Eric and I had a good time and all, but the outcome was not what we were hoping for. The fine Phoenicians came out in all of their ridiculous pre-Super Bowl spazz party "look at me, I'm made out of plastic" amazingness which made the people watching quite hilarious. I forget how many seriously fucked up people make their home in this state.

The cat and I will be heading to the vet later on. That's always fun. She is usually in a great mood after getting poked and prodded with large needles. Poor little Juney and her diabetes. The babies are going to their gramma's while I'm at the vet, so they'll be in full-on spoil mode when I get back to pick them up.

I'm back to feeling kind of funky. My sinuses are clogged and making me a bit dizzy. I think I used to pay for this feeling every once in awhile. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm sick of feeling sick. Luckily I don't go back to work before Tuesday. Weirdly enough, I feel like complaining.

what a wonderful concept, Chindogu. I love it.

I'm going to the Suns/Spurs game tonight. Professional sports are somewhat like Chindogu, if you ask me...wonderful, but useless.
I know, I know, entertainment value, and big business, and yada yada yada.

What else.....the cold (I know that's a relevant term compared to the temperatures where some of you are) is killing my knees. The years of skateboarding have taken their toll, I fear, and on some days, I just want to scream. It certainly doesn't make standing in front of a classroom very easy.

I didn't end up trying anything too new with the kiddies this week, but I did change my approach a tad. I am getting more and more at ease with the idea of being a motivational speaker than an informational speaker. It's a lot of fun trying to persuade young people to change their minds in a postive way.

nothing like teething and gas

Not sure why, but the boy was inconsolable this morning (and I mean MORNING) for about an hour. First he wanted to eat at 3:45am, then about 5:20ish he decided to cry for an hour. My loving wife, who was getting ready for work, told me he was harboring a fugitive burp, so I did my best to get it out and finally I got a few small noises that sounded like burps out of him. He's resting comfortably now, but alas, I am not.

My thoughts this morning turned to old and negligent friends. There are certain people (and none of which are those who will maybe respond to this) who I can't quite seem to let go of, even though it is very apparent they do not have any urge to maintain a friendship with me. You can only tell someone they've been a bad friend so many times before you eventually get sick of hearing their bullshit. I don't really know why I hold on to these people. I have plenty of good friends who I can count on and if anything, it's me who has been a neglectful friend of late. I really don't call anyone anymore or hang out very much, but I think those of you who know me understand why. I have two very needy little reasons for staying close to home. And very adorable reasons, as well...Plus, I kinda like being close to my wife, too, so my schedule fills up quickly....
and I still like to rock.

Anyhow...I don't know. I guess I've decided to just let it ride and if I ever get the call or the email that says "hey, what's up...haven't talked to you in awhile....." then I will know I held on for a reason. If the call never comes, well, then I won't even realize it because I will have moved on. Most of the folks I would like to stay in contact with I do....the internet is great for that.

Another ridiculous thought that occurred to me is why do I sometimes freak out and want to purge my "Friends list" of everyone who I don't really know or barely know or never talk to or who never talks to or contacts me? Then, when it gets down to the purge, I freeze and decide to hold on to all of them, just in case I want to look at their page and see what they are up to. It's weird. Most of the folks on my page are people I have at least exchanged a few ideas or pleasantries with or are bands I really like or magazines I like to read. There is also John Wayne. I'm still waiting for him to message me from the great beyond. I feel I have been a dutiful friend. It's the least he could do.

I am, apparently, good at something

I found the forms, I found the forms. Hooray for me.

The day is not even nearly over and I'm pretty exhausted. The cat started puking around 4:30am and I could not go back to sleep until after 6am. I was thinking about all kinds of un-interesting things, really, and I tried to get back to sleep. Just when I did, the alarm started going off. Luckily, Mr. L was pretty quiet until almost 8am. I got a shower in and such, and got Miss T ready fairly quietly before making him his morning bottle.

I did remember how Buzz G. and I used to climb up on these people's roof and get stoned while I was going to Camelback. Right across the street from the high school was this house with a fairly secluded roof and easy access. We would go up there, get high, then go back to class. I would never consider doing something like that now, but I sure didn't mind doing it back then.
